With the release of “Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens” the Star Wars fan community has never been stronger! New stories! New Characters! And arguably most important – new obscure characters for us to feature on the “Star Wars In Character” podcast!
In just one new movie we already have an exotic array of new “background” characters to explorer. In this article, we present 11 characters that have already caught our eye and we hope to see more of their back story in the future:
1. The Denque Sisters
Seen in Maz Kanata’s castle, the Denque Sisters are hard to miss. Here’s what we know about them so far:
They are “Culisetto”, an Insectoid species
They are frequent visitors to Maz Kanata’s castle.
They’re favorite board game is “Deia’s Dream”.
They’re first appearance (or at least the Culisetto species) was in the junior novel “Smuggler’s Run: A Han Solo and Chewbacca Adventure”
2. Bazine Netal
Bazine Netal was already been picked as a favorite new obscure character addition by SWIC co-host Tim. She has a striking visual look, and is quiet attractive in a Star Warsy way. Here’s the preliminary data on Bazine Netal:
Human Female.
Works’ as a mercenary.
Probably has First Order ties or an existing contract.
Her first appearance was in the short story “The Perfect Weapon”
3. PZ-4CO
Droids have gotten their fair share of the spotlight on SWIC, and rightfully so – some of their back stories are fascinating! We’re hoping that ends up being case with that tall drink of water with is PZ-4CO. Here’s some of what we know about this new addition to the obscure character galaxy.
She’s a protocol droid
She has been programmed with a feminine personality
Her nickname is “Peazy”.
“Peazy” was assigned to General Organa while at The Resistance’ Base.
She’s equipped with a Holorecorder
Her first appearance is in “Movie Target: A Princess Liea Adventure”.
She already has an action figure.
4. Ilco Munica
I have to admit, even with my very first viewing of “The Force Awakens” my mind was cataloging obscure characters for possible future episodes of Star Wars In Character. And this character was the first one to jump out at me. He has a very short amount of screen time, yet very memorable. During the opening scene, is the alien scene being forced to the ground, screaming, at gun point, by a First Order trooper. He’s what we know about him outside of that short screen time right now:
He’s an Adednedo Male
He’s a member of the Church of the Force
But, he’s no pacifist – he armed himself with a blaster rifle to defend his village
First appearance is in “Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens”.
5. FN-2199
This bona fide bad-ass made waves throughout the Star Wars fan community from his short but memorable appearance The Force Awakens. His popularity went through the roof and his back story is quickly developing. Here’s what we have so far:
Nicknamed “Nines”
Former friend and brother in arms with FN-2187, now known as “Finn”.
Used a Z6 Riot Control Baton when he fought Finn on screen
Has one word in the movie – “Traitor!”
First (now officially re-conned) appearance in the anthology “Before the Awakening”
6. Bobbajo
When most of us Star Wars fans first saw this character a smile immediately came to our faces. Our first look at a new alien in the Star Wars movie looked completely part of the galaxy we all love. Here’s a little bit on Bobbajo that’s already been documented:
He’s Male Nu-Cosian
Carries small animals in cages on his back – Gwerps, Phshnes, Lonlans, Zhhees, and Worrts.
Roams Jakku telling stories
Has 2 nicknames; “Storyteller” and “Crittermonger”.
First canon appearance is the sort story “All Creatures Great and Small”.
First public appearance was the video “Star Wars: Force for Change – A Message from J.J. Abrams”.
7. “Crusher” Roodown
Another visually interesting character and another one that, with the right backstory, could be a perfect subject for a SWIC episode. What little there is so far is pretty intriguing:
He’s and Abednedo Male
He angered Unkar Plutt and as a consequence, Plutt’s thugs cut off his arms.
Had his arms replaced with mechanical Load Lifter arms.
First appearance in “Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens”
8. Chief Petty Officer Unamo
The First Order gave us a great selection of characters to learn about. But with a single line and a fierce look of determination in her eye, Chief Petty Officer Unamo if our first “First Order” choice for this list. Here’s just a tad more about Officer Unamo:
She is a Human Female
Served the First Order aboard the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer the “Finalizer” – Kylo Ren’s flagship.
First appearance “Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens”
Played by the striking Kate Fleetwood.
9. Rathtars
We saw quite a bit of the Rathtars in The Force Awakens and heard a little bit about their history and reputation. Just enough to put them on our radar for a possible future episode. Here’s some information on the Rathtars:
Octopus like creatures known for hunting in packs.
Involved in the Trillia Massacre
Share’s a common ancestry with the Sarlacc
Smuggled by Han Solo and Chewbacca
May have been inspired by the Ice Worm from the classic Star Wars comic strip “Showdown”.
10. Temmin “Snap” Wexely
One of the most recognized obscure/supporting characters of The Force Awakens. Due to both the actor playing “Snap”, and the character’s origin story novel. There’s a good chance this character will grow into a much larger role in the upcoming films and might be to big for a SWIC episode. But for now, we’re keeping and eye on him to see what develops. Here’s a bit on “Snap” so far:
Human Male
Born on the Planet Akiva.
His mother was a Y-Wing pilot in the assault against The Death Star II
Re-purposed an old B1 Battledroid into an extremely efficient killing machine name “Mister Bones”.
Part of The Resistance attack against Starkiller Base
First appeared is in the novel “Aftermath”.
11. Nien Nunb
If you’re a long time listener of the “Star Wars In Character” podcast, you’re no doubt saying, “whoa, whoa, whoa…you did an episode of him, like, 5 years ago”. And you’d be right. However that story ended at Return of the Jedi. We clearly see Nien Nunb alive and well and part of The Resistance in The Force Awakens.
That leaves 30 years of back story to fill making Nien Nunb the prime candidate for the first even “Part 2” Character profile episode!
There’s no doubt some of these characters will have some spectacular back stories. We will patiently wait and watch and when there’s enough story, enough to discuss, and enough to have fun with, we will give them the spot light surely deserve.
